Bae Yong-joon's salary demands too high

The Munhwa Broadcasting Company (MBC) union is unhappy with Bae Yong-joon's latest historical drama Taewangsasingi (The Legend).

In a recent newsletter, the union claims that the production was "nothing but trouble" and the 35-year-old actor the main problem.

Bae, who is the star of the series, was paid 6 billion won (100,000 won = RM359) for the show, which comes up to 250 million won (RM896,212) per episode. His enormous salary accounts for some 15% of the total production cost of 43 billion won!

The union claims that calling the production a "massive-scale" historical series was an exaggeration since a huge chunk of the budget went to Bae.

It is also reported that the drama tainted MBC's reputation when it caused programming glitches at the network.

For example, MBC had to prolong its live news broadcast for 20 minutes because it was waiting for the show's latest reel to arrive.

Poor union fellas, I understand the dissatisfaction. Us mere mortals get paid peanuts while god-like stars like Mr. Bae earn more than our annual income filming one drama episode. Oh, boo hoo...life can be so cruel.

What people don't realize is that stars like Bae are not just being paid for their acting. Celebrities this big are like a name brand. He is being paid for his name as well as his work. Bae has fans (and thus brings in major money) all over Asia. Also, his popularity makes him an ambassador to Japan, China and Taiwan, not to mention Thailand, Malaysia and all over Asia and even other parts of the world where his dramas and movies are enjoyed. THIS is why he is paid major bucks and why he SHOULD be paid major bucks. The Legend drama was high in the ratings which brings in huge amounts of money for the broadcasting station in terms of viewership. Why are people just now bitching about his paycheck?? If the drama had bombed then I could understand the frustration over lost money. But the money was not lost and it was not a waste. South Korean unions and media need to STOP looking for ways to bash Bae Yong Joon and show some respect for what he is accomplishing FOR KOREA. God, the lack of respect for his hard work and excellent image for Korea really gets to me. And I'm not Korean---I'm American!
