CNBLUE relates embarrassing red carpet experience

"It was our first ever red carpet appearance, and the camera did not capture us," whined CNBLUE's Lee Jonghyun and Kang Minhyuk.

The pair debuted as actors in the omnibus movie Acoustic and were at the 15th Pusan International Film Festival on Oct 7.

The pair made their red carpet appearance right after Chinese actress Tang Wei (Lust, Caution) and the cameras missed them. What a pity, especially when the event was broadcasted live!

Minhyuk divulged, "This is the first time I've seen Jonghyun Hyung so nervous."

Embarrassed, Jonghyun explained, "It's true. I'm not the type who usually gets nervous while on stage, but this time I was a wreck."

Jonghyun practiced his red carpet walk and how he would wave to fans in the hotel room before the event, so it was really disappointing when the cameras failed to catch him in action. Nevertheless, the boys are excited for their movie debut.

Jonghyun and Minhyuk said, "Watching the film reminded us of the times we spent in Japan when we started our music career. At that time, we practiced in the basement.

"We think a lot about those difficult times, but we also realize that there are a lot of people who have had similar experiences. I think we are so lucky now to be able to play music in such a good environment."

Jay Park's not coming to Malaysia, goes to Singapore

Malaysian Jaywalkers will not be able to see their idol, Jay Park (a.k.a. Park Jae-beom) in the flesh but their Singaporean counterparts will be able to do so on Sept 25!

Redstar Presents, the local concert promoter that successfully brought in Super Show 2, announced at its blog yesterday (Sept 22) that the Jay Park Fan Meet Tour has fallen through.

“After several negotiations, we were unable to meet the demands of Mr. Jay Park’s Management team,” Redstar Presents wrote.

Down south, Jaywalkers in Singapore will have the opportunity to see the erstwhile 2PM leader in action at the Wave House, Sentosa.

Together with his Bboy crew Art of Movement (AOM), Jay will put on a 90-minute performance where the singer will also cover B.O.B’s hit Nothing On You and his latest single Demon.

Are any Jaywalkers from Malaysia making their way down south to Singapore for the event?

Geneses Dream Entertainment cancels two ZE:A events

ZE:A, a nine member South Korean group, was in Malaysia for a private fan meeting on Sept 12. The Mazel tov singers were also scheduled to hold a Dinner Date and High Five Session with fans on Sept 13.

While the ZE:A boys met with their fans on Sept 12, their Sept 13 events were canceled at the last minute.

Geneses Dream Entertainment (GDE), the event management company that brought the boys in, posted a simple message at their Facebook page on the day of the events itself.

It reads:

Dear All, We are sorry to inform you that Dinner Date and High Five Session today has been cancelled. Refund process will be prepared and announced two days later. Sorry for any inconvenient caused.

GDE brought boyband U-KISS to Malaysia for a private fan meeting in June 2010.

On Sept 2, local print media such as The Star, New Straits Times, Sin Chew Jit Poh and Berita Harian, received a press release from GDE announcing its closure and a 50% refund to fans for all its upcoming events.

GDE slammed the “rumour” when K-popped! and sinchew-i.com (the online arm of Sin Chew Jit Poh) reported on it.

Fans who have paid for the ZE:A events will now have to wait for the announcement on the refunding process.

JYJ fan meeting in Malaysia, anyone?

A JYJ fan meeting is currently in the planning stages and its all up to you, fans, to make it happen.

Redstar Presents, the concert promoter that organized the Super Junior's Super Show 2 in March this year, originally set the JYJ fan meet date on Oct 16. However, they may postpone the event to Nov to fullfil the fans' requests.

JYJ: Get Ready! They might be heading to Malaysia real soon.
(l-r): Yoochun, Jaejoong & Junsu

JYJ consists of Junsu, Yoochun and Jaejoong. The trio was part of the hugely popular K-pop group TVXQ. The JYJ unit was formed under Japanese label Rhythm Zone after TVXQ got entangled in legal battles with SM Entertainment.

Both JYJ's The... single and Thanksgiving Live in Dome tour DVD are doing very well on Japan's Oricon daily charts, moving nicely into the top spots.

Junsu, Yoochun and Jaejoong have all been to Malaysia twice. They previously came when TVXQ held its concerts here.

If you'd like to see the trio in Malaysia again, head on over to Redstar's JYJ Fan Meeting Tour Event Page to confirm your attendance, and to offer your comments and suggestions for the organizers to consider.

Geneses Dream Entertainment says events are on schedule!

ZE:A and Kim Hyung Jun fan meeting in Malaysia will proceed as planned,” says Geneses Dream Entertainment (GDE) at its Facebook page about an hour ago.

Apparently the press release, which we received from a reliable source in the print media, was UNTRUE.

Events organized by GDE will RUN as scheduled!

We apologize to the fans for the confusion. We’re confused as well…especially about how untrue press releases got to the local media. Even sinchew-i.com reported on GDE’s closure and 50% refund of tickets on Sept 2. (Story here).

All K-popped! wants to do is provide information for local kpop fans. If the local print media have been getting incorrect information, you can hardly expect “unprofessional bloggers” to get the correct information now, can you?

Please, don’t shoot the messenger when the message that has been sent out is not true.

Latest Update: Geneses Dream Entertainment says events are on schedule!

Geneses Dream Entertainment (GDE), the company that brought U-KISS to Malaysia for a private fan meeting in June 2010, released a statement announcing its closure.

A representative of the event management company sent out a press release stating that it could not survive on ticket sales alone, and that there is a lack of sponsors in Malaysia for Kpop acts.

The statement reads:

I would like to make an announcement as a representative of Geneses Dream Entertainment that our company has been forced to close company.

Korean music actually has a market in Malaysia, but unfortunately, companies do not trust us and are not willing to give us the support we need to continue.

Due to our mistake of accepting the offer to promote two K-pop artists within a short period of time, and with the lack of promotion time, we have lead ourselves to make the crucial decision.
GDE was working on bringing Kim Hyung Joon (of SS501 fame) and boyband ZE:A to Malaysia. The former was supposed to hold a private fan meeting on Aug 28, but it had been postponed to Oct 9. Meanwhile, ZE:A was scheduled to meet the fans on Sept 12 and 13.

Both events are now cancelled.

The statement continues:

We will still refund fans that have bought tickets from us, and the amount of refund will be 50% of the total price paid. We deeply regret that we are unable to refund the full amount because part of the funds have been used to apply for permits and visas, the venue, etc.

We would like to apologize to the Korean artists’ management for all the trouble caused. We hope that our apology will be accepted although it is hard, especially for those who have trusted us. Therefore, we are here to take full responsibility of what we have decided.

MYSJ raises RM1,300 for UNICEF

Words & vids by Sarah
Photos by Liz

Kpop fans in Malaysia got together for a good cause recently. Voices of Tomorrow (VoT), a charity event organized by MYSJ and Sapphire Pearls Malaysia, raised RM1,300 for UNICEF.

BY THE FANS, FOR THE FANS: Welcome
to Voices of Tomorrow

AT THE RECEPTION: Being greeted by the lovely ladies of MYSJ

The event was held at the Cosmos World Theme Park, Berjaya Times Square on Aug 14. Apart from raising funds for UNICEF, children from the Taman Megah Handicapped & Disabled Children’s Home were also invited for the two-hour event.

To entertain the crowd, there were performances by the 2010 Korean Wave Contest winners and participants, namely Progression, Ruffneckz, Cherry Boom and Dawn’s Arch.

DAWN'S ARCH: The all girl group strikes a pose before
their performance

CHERRY BOOM: 'See Ma, we can bend our legs like so.'

PROGRESSION: The Pahang boys hot things up

RUFFNECKZ: Dressed up like B2ST for a SHINee dance cover (Lucifer).
Oh, they are red devils indeed

The dance groups put on a good show as they got jiggy to the latest Kpop tunes such as Super Junior’s Bonamana, SHINee’s Lucifer and 4Minute’s HUH.

HUH HUH!: Cherry Boom wows us with their ability to dance in high heels.

The children from the home were treated to front-row seats. Later, they were all presented with goodie bags and took a group photo with Cosmo, the theme park’s mascot.

FOR A CAUSE: Putting a smile on the children's faces

On top of that, there were three separate lucky draw sessions in between performances. Goodies given away ranged from yummy Korean food hampers to the much-coveted Super Junior Boys In City 3 photobook. After the event wrapped up, everyone was free to go on unlimited rides at the theme park.

WINNERS ALL: Happy audience members receiving
their goodies

However, VoT closed on a rather somber note and some of the committee members were even crying. They were heartbroken because VoT was their final major event together as a team. The committee will dissolve after this due to personal commitments.

FAREWELL: The MYSJ committe members saying their goodbyes

VoT is actually MYSJ and Sapphire Pearls Malaysia’s fifth charity project. Their previous charity efforts included a blood donation drive and a world record attempt at conducting the largest dance class.

VoT is considered a success judging from the supportive crowd. It was inspiring to see Kpop fans doing their bit for charity in the name of their fave stars. Here’s hoping that other such events will take place in the future.

Good, Better, Beast!

Review by Liz K-popped
Originally published in Galaxie (August 1 - 16, 2010 issue)

Kpop fans were given a fantastic treat on 26 June when Beast rolled into town for an exclusive showcase. The six-member pop group was in Kuala Lumpur to promote the new Asian edition of their Shock of the New Era album.

Beast -- stylized as BEAST and B2ST -- put on a spectacular one-hour show at KL Live. However, while the group’s performance proved to be awesome, there were many disgruntled fans due to the showcase's messy organisation. For one, due to a series of miscommunications, quite a few fans -- some who were present at the venue as early as 6am -- had to be turned away.

On top of that, the crowd at KL Live were constantly reminded not to push during the showcase. Before the show kicked off, a special announcement was made on the matter as 35 fans had already fainted. Even BEAST themselves cautioned their excited fans of the situation during the show.

Those problems aside, Beast's showcase in Malaysia was superb! Prior to showtime, Beast music videos were shown on the big screens to warm the crowd up. Who needs an opening act when you have fans who can heartily sing along to your Korean tracks, right? Even music videos by 4Minute, a girl group under the same talent agency, Cube Entertainment, were enthusiastically received.

Then at 10 minutes to 9pm, Beast appeared onstage in smart, white suits. The boys kicked off the party with their debut hit, Bad Girl, before a quick interview session where they were asked what they thought of Malaysian fans. Needless to say, their response -- “So beautiful” -- caused the fans to roar in delight.

Beast then launched into Mystery. The maknae (youngest member) of the group Dong Woon, then introduced – in English – the group’s next song: the easy-listening ballad Easy. Then as the boys took a quick break to change costumes, three lucky fans were invited onstage to dance and sing to Beast’s smash hit, Shock. The audience was then asked to select the best impromptu performer. The lucky fan got to remain onstage for a photo session with the boys.

The boys soon returned to the stage clad in red suits and happily took pictures with the euphoric fan girl.

After performing Special, a lucky draw followed. The lucky audience member, Siti, was then invited onstage and serenaded by the boys with their ballad Oasis. Siti was sure the envy of many that night as the boys focused their attention on her throughout the song.

Dong Woon then asked the crowd, “Do you wanna take pictures with Beast?” The fans, of course, screamed that they did and the boys turned their backs to the audience and posed with the crowd in the background. Cameramen were seen scrambling onstage for the Kodak moment.

In the final mini interview with the boys, the members of Beast were asked what their plans were after Malaysia. Doo Joon, the leader, said: “We’ll return to Korea for a day, then fly off to Japan for promotions. After that, we will be preparing for our third album.”

The spectacular Beast showcase then came to a close with the boys performing a medley of Shock, Bad Girl and Mystery. Before departing the stage, Dong Woon shouted, “I love Malaysia!” The crowd screamed their gratitude only for Doo Joon to run back out and add: “Me too!”

It's fair to say that Beast definitely made a mark with their showcase. With such addictive tracks and great showmanship, their performance has definitely whetted the local K-pop appetite for more Beast-ly things. Let’s hope the boys return with a full blown concert in the future.

Malaysian Fan Gift Project for Lee Seung Gi

Malaysian Lee Seung Gi Fan Gift Project

It started off with two Malaysian Lee Seung Gi (LSG) fans who wanted to know if there are other fans out there who loved the 23-year-old 2 Days 1 Night star. And so Khoo Yoke Leng and her friend created a fan page on Facebook called ♥LEE SEUNG GI 이승기-MALAYSIA AIREN ♥.

After only four months, more than 300 fans joined the page. The move to create a page for the gathering of Malaysian Lee Seung Gi fans was an excellent idea as the fans enjoyed exchanging LSG updates and a great bond between them have been formed. The bond has been made stronger each day by their love for the Korean singer / actor. In no time, they had embarked on a Fan Gift Project for their beloved Seung Gi.

The main objective of the Fan Gift Project is to let Seung Gi know the existence of his Malaysian fans. YES LSG...THERE ARE FANS HERE IN MALAYSIA & WE LOVE YOU!
The project took four months to co-ordinate and it was headed by one of the creators of the FB group, Khoo Yoke Leng (@yokelengkhoo). Gifts that were collected for Seung Gi includes a pair of Selangor Pewter chopsticks and shot-glasses, "vitamin pills" filled with love messages, a fuzzy calendar showing Seung Gi's debut date, scrapbooks, letters, postcards, soft toys etc. The box which was to be flown to South Korea containing the gifts came up to 6kg in weight and cost nearly RM300 in postage fee!

Nadya (left) and Yoke Leng at the post office sending off the 6kg gift box

Collecting the gifts was only part of the project. In an e-mail interview, Yoke Leng told me, "The main problem we had was...how do we get the gifts to Seung Gi?" Although the girls had LSG's company address and the KBS address, they were not 100% sure if the gifts will arrive to Seung Gi, with no one on the other end to receive it. It was too risky to just send the 6kg box over to Seoul.

Luck has it, that one of the Malaysian AIREN's recommended Alex (@AA_CHAN), a blogger and English Instructor in Seoul. He would be the recipient of the precious box of gifts, ensuring that it would be given to the right people. At the same time, Yoke Leng got to know a Korean AIREN from Lee Seung Gi's official fan club in Korea. Yoke Leng arranged for Alex and the Korean AIREN to meet and the latter will then pass the gifts to Seung Gi! Whalla, project completed!

The box left Malaysia on 31 July and reached Seung Gi on 14 August 2010. :-)

Malaysian AIRENs are very happy indeed!

Seung Gi fans call themselves AIREN. "Airen" means "someone i love" or "a loved one" in Mandarin.

Letters & postcards were included in the gift box.
Each gift is meaningful and painstakingly prepared with love.

Nadya, Yoke Leng & Aziem: Fans share a common bond

Love pills....sure to cure any ailment

Shot glasses so LSG can enjoy his soju better. How thoughtful!

K-popped! readers meet the Wonder Girls

K-POPPED! EXCLUSIVE

Words & vids by Liz
Photos by Orchid

Four readers of K-popped! had the opportunity to get up close and personal with the Wonder Girls at Sunway Resort and Spa Hotel on Aug 1.

LUCKY FOUR: (left to right) Iman Atira, Nur Atiqah,
Nazwin & Siti Nur Fatehah

K-popped! had to keep the venue of the exclusive meet and greet a secret, so we asked our winners Iman Atira and Siti Nur Fatehah, along with their respective friends Nur Atiqah and Nazwin, to meet up at a Starbucks outlet in the adjoining shopping mall, Sunway Pyramid.

Call time for the meet and greet was 11:45am. We got to the hotel lobby five minutes early and the girls spotted VJ Sean (MTV Korea) outside the lobby. They quickly excused themselves for a photo opportunity while I made an important phone call for my next instruction.

SO HOT: VJ Sean of MTV Korea (center) has many girls falling
for him, including our winners :)

The MTV Asia contact said she would call back in a few minutes' time. While waiting, Orchid arrived and took pictures of the girls with their gifts for the Wonder Girls!

GIFTS: 'Our gifts for the Wonder Girls!
We hope they'll like them.'

A while later, my cell phone buzzed and the instructions were: “Come up to the 15th floor, Business Center 3.” When we arrived at the 15th floor, we were let into the holding room where the other lucky Wonderfuls were.

SHOW OF SUPPORT: Cheering on the Wonder Girls in
the holding room

While waiting for the Wonder Girls to arrive, an MTV videographer got the group of fans (about 20 people) cheering into his camera for the Wonder Girls’ MTV show. Watch it below!

After that, selected fans were interviewed and asked to dance / sing to Wonder Girls’ songs. The Wonderfuls were so supportive of one another, and they sang for those who danced.

K-popped!’s winners, Iman Atira and Nur Artiqah were asked to perform So Hot! They gamely danced for the camera :). Watch it below!

As the fans waited in the holding room, the organizers of the meet and greet were at the corridor, waiting for the Wonder Girls to arrive.

ARE THEY HERE YET?: 'Wonder Girls are on their way down,
folks. Look alive now :P'

Soon, the five beautiful talents walked past us along with their entourage. After the girls have settled down, the meet and greet started.

Fans were put into groups of 6 and each group was allowed FIVE minutes with the girls. They could present them with gifts and also ask for autographs and hugs (yay!).

K-popped! winners were called up first and the four girls, along with Orchid and I, were the first group to meet the Wonder Girls! Sweet.

Watch the video of our readers in their precious moment with the Wonder Girls.

Wonder Girls spread the wonder at MTV World Stage 2010

So, you were there at the Sunway Lagoon Surf Beach on July 31, huh? It was a wet and humid affair as the rain didn’t let up until close to midnight. The music fans were awesome, the performers ranged from OK to spectacular, but the waiting between the acts was a chore.

VIP ACCESS: The uncrowded VIP entrance to the
MTV World Stage Live in Malaysia 2010.

Due to the bad weather, the huge LCD screen malfunctioned when Korean girl group the Wonder Girls performed their set, so there was a retake of Nobody after the party ended. There were many technical problems throughout the show as well. At one point, the MTV VJs mics malfunctioned and some of the TV screens around the VIP area showed nothing but a black screen.

MTV VJ Utt had the thankless task to apologize to the crowd for the many technical problems. He was booed at, which was understandable as those who were in the Normal Zone had to endure hunger, exorbitantly-priced food and drinks, and being squashed in a sardine can-like environment for six to seven hours.

RAINY DAY: It rained the whole night. The ponchos
provided by MTV kept us dry

K-popped! was there for one reason only – the Wonder Girls! And boy, the girls sure did not disappoint (I dug Katy Perry too. That Peacock song was cool, it’ll be in her upcoming album).

The Wonder Girls’ retake of Nobody turned out to be a bonus for Wonderfuls who hadn’t left right after their set that night. The girls sent us off with loads of well wishes and a great promise – to return to Malaysia for their very own concert!

Read on for a more in-depth look at the Wonder Girls’ set and Nobody retake.

Wonder Girls entertain with retro pop

A little after 8pm on July 31, the Wonder Girls appeared on stage behind huge cages. Each of them did a sexy little dance in the cage before busting out and launching into I Wanna. Next, the quintet donned cool shades and sang Goodbye.

BRIGHT LIGHTS: 'Gotta protect our eyes, guys and gals, otherwise
we might just dance off stage' - Pic credit MTV Asia

K-popped!
fans went wild as So Hot came on and many sang along with the girls. The quintet then got the crowd competing between the various sections as they taught us how to sing the chorus to Tell Me. They then perfomed the song once the crowd got the part down pat.

SO HOT: 'Malaysia, if you think your weather's hot,
check us out ;).' - Pic credit MTV Asia

After Tell Me, they dived right into their latest single 2 Different Tears complete with a rock interlude where the Wonder Girls brought out their power guitars. Too bad the girls were just “air guitaring” :-P.

Before they rocked off stage, the girls teased with an appetizer of Nobody. The crowd went wild. Lights out, exit stage left.

During the break, interviews of the girls by MTV Iggy were shown on the big screens. A while later, the Wonder Girls exploded onto stage again in all their glittery glory for Nobody. They wore their famous sparkly gold dresses. Beautiful.

Their smash hit was extremely well-received by the crowd and the Wonder Girls' set, which lasted about 40 minutes, ended with a bang!

Retaking Wonder Girls’ Nobody

MTV World Stage Live in Malaysia 2010 was recorded and will be aired around the region on the MTV channel. Due to the rain, the giant LCD backdrop screens malfunctioned so the Wonder Girls had to retake their Nobody performance.

TAKE 2: See the screens at the back? It's working!!

It was already past midnight after Katy Perry ended the music extravaganza with fireworks and fanfare. Music fans started leaving. The MTV VJs were already working the crowd at the post party at a club nearby. A technician/stage manager filled in their shoes and made announcements on the re-appearance of the Wonder Girls.

WARM WISHES: The Wonder Girls sending out
their love to the fans

Wonderfuls stayed back for the retake, and those in the VIP/back were asked to “don’t mind the security” and move up to the front of the stage. If was supposed to be a 5-minute wait, but it took like, forever, for the Wonder Girls to appear again. Here, watch their “encore” performance below.

After the retake, the Wonder Girls sent us off with warm wishes. Yenny said, “Kami akan merindui mu” (We will miss you) and the crowd roared. The girls were surprised at the response. Sun then said that they will definitely return to our shores for a concert.

Yes, please do girls. Give us a proper Wonder Girls concert where there won't be any arduous waiting time.

IN LIVING COLOR: Check out the designs on the screen. That was
the effect needed for TV

TAKE A BOW: The Wonder Girls say Goodbye ;)

MTV World Stage (VIP area)

MTV World Stage - we were there!

Thanks to MTV Asia, Liz and Orchid got VIP passes to the MTV World Stage at Sunway Lagoon on 31 July 2010. Here's Orchid's account of the event.

It was wet, but not so wild at the almost 6-hour long marathon concert. Why not so wild? There were only four acts, namely BUNKFACE, WONDER GIRLS, TOKIO HOTEL and KATY PERRY but the concert ran for six long hours! Due to the rain, there were technical difficulties and it took forever for the crew to set up the stage for each act. They played MTV videos in between the acts, but the intervals just got way too long man. It must have gotten really hot, wet and smelly at the non-VIP area too. Poor concert goers also had to buy expensive mineral water (at RM5 per bottle) and food. Some started queuing to get front and center at noon!

At the VIP and VVIP area, MTV provided free flow of food and drinks so it was at least bearable. They served Korean barbecue chicken sticks (from the Street Cafe), satay, Indonesian fried rice, roti canai (the out of a box kind), soft drinks and dessert. The most useful item provided however, was a cool MTV World Stage plastic poncho that kept most of us dry throughout the rainy evening.

Due to the rain, the giant LCD screen on stage got short-circuited. There wasn't any LCD display when the Wonder Girls came to do their set! Awww....but they bravely performed and not many noticed the technical hiccup at first. However, they had to do their last song - NOBODY again right at the end, when Katy Perry finished her set - for tv recording purposes I assumed. Energy was low and even the MTV VJs had already left the concert (to go to the after party at a club nearby) by then. The crowd that stayed right up to the end however, got a very warm farewell from the lovely Wonder Girls. Sun the leader promised that they will come back to Malaysia for a full-fledged concert soon. Oh yes please!!!

No DSLR's allowed, so all pictures taken on my iPhone.

Venue: Sunway Lagoon - as usual, they drained out the wave pool for us to partayyyy!
