Mr Good Bye (2006)

Korean title: 미스터 굿바이
Episodes: 16
Director: Hwang Eui Kyeong
Cast
: Ahn Jae Wook, Lee Bo Young, Jo Dong Hyuk, Oh Yoon Ah

What's popping:

This is one of my favourite Korean dramas to date! I rate it right up there with other favourites like My Lovely Sam-soon and yes, the recent phenomenon, Boys Over Flowers. Although Mr Good Bye did not garner high ratings when it was screened in South Korea in 2006 because of popular period drama Jumong, it was one of Ahn Jae Wook's most memorable dramas.

David Yun Hyeon Seo
(Ahn Jae Wook) is a hot shot hotelier. He was adopted and now resides in Las Vegas, and works for the prestigious Caesar Group of hotels. He is successful, rich, intelligent and
very good at what he does. Because he is so good at downsizing hotels, he has earned the nickname "Mr Good Bye". Hyeon Seo is at the peak of his career and just accomplished the take-over of the prestigious Nikko Hotel. However, before claiming his prize, his boss puts him on a special assignment at Emperor Hotel in Korea for six months.

Yun Hyeon Seo - hot shot hotelier.
Ahn Jae Wook doesn't speak English good enough to be a
convincing Korean-American but this is a minor set-back.

Choi Young In
(Lee Bo Young) recently got dumped by her boyfriend and travels to Las Vegas alone. She won tickets for the trip via a marathon she took part in. On the plane, she meets fellow
Korean Ronny who is Hyeon Seo's younger brother. That was how Young In (28) and Hyeon Seo's (30) fate intertwined. Complete opposites, they hated each other at first but soon a relationship blossoms.

Both Hyeon Seo and Young In finds themselves on the same flight from LA to Seoul. Hyeon Seo, who has a history of heart disease suffered a heart attack on the flight and Young In was the one who practically saved him. Back in Seoul, Hyeon Seo offers Young In a job at Emperor Hotel as a concierge. Desperate for a job, she accepts it, but struggles because she is not qualified. Young In is a trained beautician and has no clue of what it takes to become a concierge and serve guests at a 5-star hotel. She also lacks language skills.

Young In: Damsel in distress. Two men vie for her affections...

In comes the dashing chief concierge Kyle (Jo Dong Hyuk) to the rescue. The steely, mild mannered Kyle of Korean - Japanese parentage offers to teach Young In the ropes with firmness but with love. He is also interested in Young In and is secretly the son of the previous owner of Nikko Hotel. Kyle is very much Hyeon Seo's rival. In fact, he returned to Korea to keep an eye on the very man who caused his father's death and who will eventually take over Nikko.

Cheif Concierge Kyle is good looking and seems to be what
every
woman would want in a man. Yet, the girl chooses the
difficult but smooth Hyeon Seo.

Kang Su Jin (Oh Yoon Ah) is Hyeon Seo's best friend, a single mom and a heart surgeon at a local hospital. She is also a member of Korea's leading heart transplant team. Blessed with brains and beauty, she offers Hyeon Seo a place to stay during his six month stint in Korea. She has a seven year-old son named Yoon who is the splitting image of Hyeon Seo. Su Jin seems friendly and harmless at first, but later, she tries to manipulate her way into Hyeon Seo's life.

Kang Su Jin and her cute son Yoon.
Yoon is missing Hyeon Seo - the only father figure he has ever known.

They not only look alike, they even have the same sleeping pose...

Despite Su Jin's advances, Hyeon Seo regards Su Jin as a platonic friend. He only has romantic feelings for Young In. It's heart warming to see how he falls in love with Young In. Hyeon Seo is not an easy man to love. He's stubborn and selfish at times. Young In is bubbly, naive and only knows how to love Hyeon Seo unselfishly. Fending off rumours and finger-pointing from colleagues who thinks her to be a gold digger, Young In shows the guarded Hyeon Seo how to love.

Despite the odds against her, Young In clings on to her love for Hyeon Seo

The plot:

Eligible and successful, Yun Hyeon Seo seems to have it all, a huge comfortable home, flashy car, and at only 30, he is already very accomplished in the hotel business. However, Hyeon Seo suffers from a weak heart and soon finds out that his only chance of survival is to get a heart transplant. Will he survive?

This is fundamentally the story of Yun Hyeon Seo - how he juggles work (lots of hotel politics), love (he meets and falls in love with Young In) and finds his family - a son and his own biological mother.

This is the story of Yun Hyeon Seo, a man who desperately wants to live.

Ahn Jae Wook is Mr Goodbye

Watch it:

One good reason to watch it is Ahn Jae Wook is a very charismatic actor and he wears the nicest tailored suits and matching ties in this drama.

By the way, the drama's soundtrack is really nice too. The opening song is a sexy saxaphone jazz number and the title song Mr Good Bye is an awesome ballad. Sample the OST here.

Ahn Jae Wook's Forever Summer Camp

Ahn Jae Wook talking to his fans at summer camp (2005)

I want to go to summer camp too!

That was my thought when i found out hallyu star Ahn Jae Wook holds a summer camp in the outskirts of Seoul, Korea and fans from all around the world get to spend 3D/2N with the star. Talk about down to earth and appreciating your fans! Ahn does not make "special appearances" at the camp, but he will indeed spend the entire three days with his 400 or so fans at the camp site! Video clips show that he will cook barbecued samgeoupsal (pork ribs) and serve his fans too.

What do they do at camp? You can read the full review of the 2007 camp on Visit Korea website. But to get a gist of it, here's a brief itinerary...

DAY 1:
  • Arrival and check-in
  • Groups and ice-breaking
  • Cultural performance by groups (evening)

DAY 2:
  • Outdoor games (sort of like a tele-match)
  • Pool games (after lunch)
  • Barbecue outdoor dinner (where AJW BBQs his favourite samgeoupsal for fans)
  • Mini-concert

DAY 3:
  • Farewells (AJW reads out love notes from fans)

Why does he do this you may ask? To this, Ahn Jae Wook (38) says, "I've made a promise to my fans."

Ahn has faithfully kept to this promise he made to his beloved fans many years ago and has never failed to hold the annual summer camp since 1996. Come rain or shine, the camp will be held! This year will mark Ahn's 13th Forever Summer Camp and it will fall on 25- 27July, 2009.

Fun & games time - Forever Summer Camp 2006

How to enroll for AJW's Forever Summer Camp? First you've got to become a Forever Fan Club (Ahn's official fan club) member. They will guide you through the rest!

Here's a special video on EW (Korea's Entertainment Weekly) showing you clips of the 2008 Forever Summer Camp.

Ahn Jae Wook - Friends MV

Ahn Jae Wook sings about friendship

Now this is a blast from the past. Korean singer (and actor) Ahn Jae Wook did a cover of Emil Chau's very famous Mandarin song Friends / Peng You (朋友).

Ahn released the song in his 4th album REDS IN ANJAEWOOK in 2003.

I loved the Mandarin version. Now i love the Korean version too! Check out the music video here!

Here's the lyrics if you want to sing along.

친구 ( 안재욱 )
Chin-goo (Ahn Jae Wook)

Ahn Jae Wook at recording studio

Ahn Jae Wook text messages his friend...
"Hyung, wanna grab a bite? I'm done with recording for the day."

Singer and actor Ahn Jae Wook (Mr Good-bye, Oh! Feel Young) has recovered from his throat surgery (he went for a minor procedure to remove a lump from his throat in May) and is back in the recording studio. He resumed work at the studio on 5th June. Ahn is currently working on his mini-album which will be released simultaneously in Korea and Japan!

There will be one Japanese song in this new album (for the Japan version) so fans in Japan will be very happy. The singer has taken great effort in learning the pronunciation of the Japanese song and recorded the song repeatedly to make it perfect!

More pictures of Ahn Jae Wook in the recording studio after the jump...

These photos were taken on 11 June, at his recording studio. It was the last day of recording for the new album.

The album is scheduled to be released on 19 August, 2009.

Working on the last song on 11 June, 2009

Lee Yoo-hoon says Good Bye

First of all, I’d like to know who this Lee Yoo-hoon singer is. I can’t find anything about the talent on the (English section of the) Internet.

This elusive Lee lends his beautiful vocals to one of the more prominent songs from the Ahn Jae-wook/Lee Bo-young drama Mr. Goodbye.

Hello!: Ahn Jae-wook is Mr. Goodbye

Orchid is watching the drama and the haunting track comes on during the show, subsequently lodging itself in my head even if I’m only back during the weekends.

Do you know where I can download a good quality MP3 of the track? Wanna add it to my playlist.

The song sounds like this:

Ahn Jae Wook wins lawsuit, recuperates from throat surgery

Ahn Jae-wook & Lee Bo-young in the
2006 KBS drama Mr. Good-bye

This is the first time i am writing about Ahn Jae-wook. I've been sort of watching KBS World's encore drama Mr. Good-bye (2006) in which he stars opposite actress Lee Bo-young (Queen of the Game). I wasn't very impressed by him at first sight as he does not have the usual tall, good looks that Korean leading men all had. So i thought to myself..."What kind of lead actor is this? He's short and not that good looking. Can he carry a drama?" But before the hour was up, i was proven wrong and what this man lacks in height or conventional good looks, he makes up for in charisma and that certain x-factor. I've discovered that Ahn is attractive in his own way and has the unique ability to smile with his eyes. Okay, with that, here's some news on the actor (which i just found out, is a composer and singer as well!)

Actor, singer and composer Ahn Jae Wook (Saranghae-I Love You, Mr. Good-bye) recently won a revenue share lawsuit against a Japanese agency. The Seoul Central District Court instructed the agency to compensate Ahn Jae-wook more than 200 million won for payments not made to the artist.

Ahn Jae-wook in September 2008 filed a case that Japanese management agency IMX did not pay him proceeds from concerts and activities from his tour in Japan.

Ahn won the lawsuit against Japanese agency IMX.
Oh yes, they finally paid me what they owed me.

Meanwhile, Ahn Jae-wook (38) is now recuperating from a throat surgery he underwent in late March to remove a cyst. While recording his mini-album which will be released simultaneously in Korea and Japan, he felt something was wrong with his throat. Doctors found a cyst which had to be removed immediately. He was then given strict orders to rest his voice for at least a month.

Ahn was originally scheduled to go on a three-city tour in Japan on May 27th to promote his mini-album. However, this plans have been postponed due to the operation. Ahn promises to come back as soon as possible to resume recording his mini-album and concert preparation.

Ahn Jae-wook donates to Sichuan earthquake victims

Many of us are saddened by the almost back-to-back natural disasters in Myanmar and Sichuan, China.

The search continues : A member of a South Korean search and rescue team
searches for survivors at a collapsed chemical factory in Yinghua town
near Shifang after the 8.0 quake rocked China's Sichuan province on May 12. (AFP/Liu Jin)

Been digging around to find out if any of our beloved and generous Hallyu stars are helping out.

I'm not disappointed as on May 16, South Korea's actor/singer Ahn Jae-wook (37) became the first foreign entertainer to make a donation to the victims of the Sichuan earthquake.

Ahn Jae-wook donated generously to the
victims of the Sichuan earthquake

The Oh! Feel Young actor gave 50mil won (approx. RM 155,000 / USD 47,800) to a fund organised by Chinese singer Han Hong (pic below).

It is reported that in a letter, Ahn Jae-wook said that he had seen the devastation at earthquake-hit Sichuan on TV and is donating the fund, as well as sending his heartfelt sympathies, to the victims through his friend Han Hong.

Han Hong takes the initiative to raise funds
for relief work in Sichuan, China

This is what's going/went on in Sichuan at the time of writing:
  • Mourning. At 2.28pm on May 19, exactly a week after the 8.0 magnitude quake hit Sichuan, the Chinese observed 3 minutes of silence to mourn the dead. At least 34, 000(!) people are confirmed dead. China will continue to mourn for 3 days. All China flags will fly at half-mast, whether in China or at Chinese diplomatic missions abroad. The Beijing Olympic torch relay has been suspended from Monday to Wednesday.
  • Aftershock. An aftershock of 6 or 7 on the Richter scale will likely hit Wenchuan, which is Southwest of Sichuan. A warning has been issued by the Sichuan Seismological Bureau. They predict the aftershock to occur either on Monday or Tuesday (May 20).

Oh! Feel Young (2004)

Korean title: 오! 필승 봉순영 (Oh! Pil-seung, Bong Soon-young)

What's popping:

The title. Why is it translated to Oh! Feel Young? Does Pil-seung mean “feel young” in Korean?

Anyway, I watched the drama last night/early morning and enjoyed it. It's funny in the fish-out-of-water kind of way.

Ahn Jae-wook (안재욱) is hilarious portraying the bumbling Pil-seung. He's a good-for-nothing lazy bum who happens to have family ties with the Chairwoman of a chain of hypermarts. When he learns of his real identity - the heir to the mega-corporation - he instantly gets a position of power at the organisation, ruffling a few feathers in the process.

One of them is the very dynamic and debonair Jae-woong (Ryu Jin, 류진 of Love Truly). The child prodigy is dissatisfied that a wastrel is entrusted with such heavy responsibilities, and threatens to quit his managerial position. However, he eventually decides to stick around and treat the situation as a challenge.

A love triangle between the men and a hypermart employee named Soon-young (Chae Rim,채림) is thrown into the mix. In the 4th episode last night, Soon-young gets chummy with Jae-woong, leaving Pil-seung heartbroken.

Pil-seung then starts to take his work seriously. With the help of his reliable assistant Yu-jeong (Park Seon-young, 박선영) - a possible love interest - the protagonist sets out to prove his worth. Yeah, game ON, people!

Nice drama, but quite late in the night.

Synopsis:

Can a guy who knows nothing about the ruthless world of wheeling and dealing succeed or will he be knocked down by the back stabbers and opportunists around him?

Slumberland: Hey, hey, hey...watch that drool!

You've just got to watch and see if the happy-go-lucky and uneducated Pil-seung rises to the occasion or crashes and burns...and at the same time, win the heart of his true love. Phew!

Watch it:
  • KBS World (Astro Channel 303)
  • Korean with English subtitles (yay!)
  • 11.40pm to 12.40am
  • For the days, please check your Astro guide. I can’t find mine and the online one sucks.
