Korean title: 해운대 (Hae-un-dae)
What’s popping:
Hands down Lee Min-ki, who portrays Choi Hyeong-sik. Sure, he only has a supporting role in the flick but the model-turned-actor deftly portrays a chivalrous and charming coastguard.
As the simple and kind hearted Hyeong-sik who meets sassy Hee-mi (Kang Ye-won), Min-ki’s character is an absolutely lovable one that turns out to be a selfless hero.
The film looks at the various lives that are affected by a tsunami that hits Haeundae, an extremely popular beach in Pusan, South Korea.
Apart from the affable Hyeong-sik and his new friend, we also witness the lives of simple fisherfolk Choi Man-sik (Seol Kyeong-gu) and Kang Yeon-hee (Ha Ji-won), whose romance is blossoming in the wake of the impending disaster.
There’s also the story that involves the fractured family of Kim Hwi (Park Joong-hoon), the geologist who discovers the tsunami. As their story unfolds, Kim Hwi is given a chance to reconcile with his estranged ex-wife (played by Uhm Jung-hwa) and young daughter.Estranged: Divorced couple - Kim Hwi (Park, right) and his
ex (Uhm) - tries to communicate through telepathy. It doesn't work.
Expect the filmmakers to milk sympathy from this story for all its worth...and doggone it, it worked on me. *sniffle*
The special effects, which are done by the same people behind the Perfect Storm, aren’t mind blowing, but functional.
The stories are at once touching and hilarious. However, there’s nothing spectacular that makes you sit up and take notice. Everything that you see here, you’ve seen it before in other disaster flicks. On a whole, the film feels like it’s just “going through the motions”.
Nonetheless, the comic relief is surprisingly very effective here. It comes in various forms such Hyeong-sik, who is bullied by the outspoken Hee-mi; and the rough around the edges Dong-choon (Kim In-kwon), whose luck is so unbelievable it’s hilarious.
Haeundae is an entertaining movie, but it’s not a tsunami of a loss (heh, heh) if you give it a miss.
The plot:
Haeundae, which is located in the port city of Pusan, draws one million visitors to its beach every year. As holidaymakers bask under the sun one hot summer day, a mega-tsunami barrels its way to the beachfront community at 500 miles per hour!
Watch it:
It started playing in Malaysian cinemas since Sept 17. Support the Hallyu, buy a ticket :-P.

The Man Who Can't Get Married press conference

Kim So Eun shows off her skinny arms and
Sanggu the chinhuahua at the press conference
After watching her in a supporting role as Gaeul in Boys Before Flowers, i know many are anxiously waiting to see Kim So-eun in another drama. Fans of the young lass (she just enrolled into university, but is currently on a study break due to filming this drama) won't have to wait long as her new drama will be aired on KBS World soon!
The new KBS2 television drama The Man Who Can't Get Married, staring Ji Jin-hee, Uhm Jung-hwa, Yang Jung-an and Kim So-eun held a press conference at 2pm, June 9th at Seoul's Imperial Palace Hotel.
The drama is a romantic comedy based on the popular Japanese drama Kekkon Dekinai Otoko which aired in 2006. The Man Who Can't Get Married will start airing on June 15, after The Slingshot (Story of a Man) ends its run (in South Korea that is).

Uhm Jung-hwa meets The Man Who Can’t Get Married
We last saw her on the small screen opposite Oh Ji-ho in the romantic comedy, Get Karl! Oh Soo-jung in 2007. Now singer-cum-actress Uhm Jung-hwa is set to topline another drama entitled The Man Who Can’t Get Married.
Uhm's (38) new drama sees her portraying a doctor who leads a stable and comfortable life…until she meets a strange and eccentric 40-year-old architect named Jaehee (played by Ji Jin-hee). Needles to say, sparks fly between the two.
For her role, Uhm had to tone down her make-up and adopt a “professional”-like hairstyle to play the doctor (like in the pics you see).
The Man Who Can’t Get Married premieres on the KBS network in South Korea in June, taking over the Kim Kang-woo/Park Shi-yeon drama Story of a Man.

In conjunction of the fashion magazine's 12th anniversary, Vogue Korea will be showcasing artistic photographs of 100 celebrities and their pets. It's a charity event and the stars are photographed with their beloved pets for a good cause.
I am surprise to see that many hallyu stars actually own beautiful furry friends. Celebrities like Lee Hyo-ri, Uhm Jung Hwa, DBSK's Micky Yoo-chun, Yoon Eun Hye, Kong Hyo Jin, Kim Ji-suk - to name a few, are among the celebrities who took part in the project.
Some of the best of Korea's photographers - KT Kim, Koo Bohn-chang, Kim Bo-ha and Choi Sei-hon contributed their skills.
Pet accessories from Tiffany & Co., 10 Corso Como, Juicy Couture, Mulberry, Celine, Hermes and Marc Jacobs will be up for sale at the event. Limited edition designs by MCM, Louis Quatorze and Tomboy will also be on sale.
Proceeds from the sale will be donated to a veterinarians' association.

Uhm Jung-hwa channels Madonna for DISCO
The South Korean press dubs her Korea's Madonna, and I think the 37-year-old singer/actress is taking it too literally. It kinda shows with the release of her 10th (mini) album D.I.S.C.O, a tribute to the rollicking 70s complete with out-of-this-world tacky fashion.
But why knock a successful formula? Madonna hit pay dirt with her Confessions on a Dance Floor album (the Queen of Pop's 10th album too!) back in 2005.
The album was a throwback to the 70s disco era as well, and the smash hit single from the album Hung Up, contained a sample of ABBA's 1979 hit Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight).
According to Wikipedia, Hung Up is Madonna's biggest selling single to date and one of the most successful singles of all time, reaching number one in 45 countries!
And so, Uhm Jung-hwa has hopped onto the retro bandwagon in her comeback effort. (It has been two years since her last album Prestige (2006)). Will Jung-hwa sshi succeed in climbing up the K-pop charts with D.I.S.C.O?
For her latest album, Uhm enlisted the help of the younger generation such as T.O.P. and G-Dragon of Big Bang, much like how Madonna worked with Justin Timberlake and Timbaland on Hard Candy. That 4 Minutes track is kewl huh?
Time is waiting/ We only got four minutes to save the world/ No hesitating/ Grab a boy/ Go grab your girl
Sorry, I digress...but it's JT!!!
I've listened to Uhm Jung-hwa's D.I.S.C.O track and it's just so-so for me. It is...bouncy.
Nevertheless, T.O.P. fans will no doubt drool over their idol, and Uhm's colourful get-ups may create some buzz but honestly, I'm not getting Hung Up over D.I.S.C.O ;-P.
Here's a look at how Uhm Jung-hwa stacks up against Madonna. All I can say is, the Material Mom ain't called the Queen of Pop for nuthin' ;-).
Uhm Jung-hwa can be the sanitized Asian copycat, if you like.

Uhm Jung-hwa is T.O.P's friend
Now that we've seen the similarities, we can make a guess at the concept of Uhm Jung-hwa's next album!

Maybe she'll call hers S.U.G.A.R. instead ;-).

Uhm Jung Hwa and TOP do the DISCO
I was surfing and did a double take when i saw this photo of Uhm Jung Hwa (37) and Big Bang's T.O.P! They were both together on stage at the Mnet Live Broadcast - M Count Down music program on the 10th July.
Now why should i be surprise anyway? Since they call Uhm Jung Hwa the Korean Madonna. And if Madonna and Justin Timberlake (JT) can come together superbly in 4 Minutes...then why can't Uhm Jung Hwa and T.O.P do the DISCO!

Korean stars' hits and misses
In the world of entertainment, a role could either make or break you. Stars such as Yoon Eun-hye, Rain, Han Ye-seul and Kim Ah-joong became big movie/drama stars after being the second (or third) choice for a role!
Here's a look at who did what, in which show, and what happened:
Yoon Eun-hye
Made it big through her tomboy role in Coffee Prince. Initially, Kim Ah-joong was the favourite for the role.
However, an exclusive contract with a shampoo company prevented Kim Ah-joong from cutting her hair short. Thus, the role went to Yoon Eun-hye, who had no problems lopping her locks off for the character.
Han Ye-Seul
The actress played Jo Anna in Fantastic Couple/ Couple or Trouble, which became a hit in Korea. However, she wasn't the first choice for the role; producers wanted Uhm Jung-hwa, but Uhm had to turn down the offer because of her busy schedule. She was preparing for the release of her 9th album.
However, Han Ye-seul missed out on a golden opportunity too when she turned down the Jung Ryu-won's role in My Lovely Sam-soon.
Rain
He wasn't the first choice for the Lee Yeong-jae character in Full House but persevered to get the role.
Initially, the producers offered it to Jung Woo-sung, and then to Lee Jeong-jae when Jung declined the offer. Lee also turned down the role because he had to prepare for his film Typhoon. Since the Energizer Bunny was continuously asking about the role, he eventually got it.
Cho Seung-woo
He perfectly portrayed an autistic 20-year-old in the film Marathon. The role only went to him after Shin Ha-gyoon turned down the role because he was busy shooting a movie. Second choice Park Hae-il didn't want to portray an autistic man so he rejected the role too.

Believe it or not, Kim Ah-joong wasn't the first choice for 200 Pounds Beauty. Many names were dropped, such as Ko So-young, Kim Hee-sun, Lee Na-young and Soo-ae but the actresses all felt uneasy portraying a character who undergoes a complete plastic makeover.
Kim Ah-joong got the role because she wasn't reluctant to play a plastic beauty.
Other stars who have missed out on golden opportunities include Cha In-pyo, who turned down Shiri, The Foul King, The Host, Friend, Kick the Moon, My Wife is a Gangster and My Boss, My Hero and Kim Hee-sun who rejected Autumn in my Heart, All In, Winter Sonata, Lovers in Paris, Phoenix and Sorry, I Love You.
