South Korean car makers in Malaysia

There are three South Korean car makers and all of them are well represented in M'sia.

  • Hyundai
  • Kia - a subsidiary of Hyundai
  • Ssangyong
  • Daewoo
Hyundai

For some reason, it' s called Hyundai-Sime Darby Motors.

In West Malaysia, i've seen the Atos, Matrix, Trajet, Getz & Sonata. We also have the Hyundai Accent (thanks NC).

The cute and zippy Hyundai Getz

Kia

Models: Naza Ria, Picanto, Rio, Optima, Spectra, Sorento, Citra, Sportage

Kia Sportage - i've seen these on the road quite a lot lately

SsangYong

Ssangyong is Korea’s off-roaders specialist. Thanks to the technology transferred from Mercedes-Benz, it developed some good off-roaders from zero within a few years. Also don’t forget the Chairman luxurious sedan, Korea’s first and still the best luxurious car.

Product range in Msia: Actyon Sports, Kyron, Rexton II, Stavic, Chairman

Rexton II the luxury 7-Seater SUV

Daewoo

The Asian ecomonic crisis in 1998 hit Daewoo hard. Burdened by heavy debt, Daewoo was sold to General Motors in 2002. The Korean no.2 car maker has modern new factories and R&D facilities, but its brand image was too weak. GM decided to operate Daewoo as an OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) supplying cars to Chevrolet, Holden & Suzuki.

Anyway, there are actually 2 Hyundai distributors in Malaysia and they handle different models. You are right about Hyundai Sime Darby handling the models you mentioned, but there is also the Hyundai Accent sold by Kah Bintang and a few other models. - Paul Tan
