Korean film to be submitted for Oscars

Secret Sunshine by director Lee Chang-dong has been chosen to be submitted to the 2008 Academy Awards under the category of Best Foreign Language Film. The film also won actress Jeon Do-yeon the Best Actress award at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year.

Secret Sunshine was nominated for submission by 6 judges from the Korean Film Council. The film was picked as it was deemed most suitable for the U.S. awards ceremony's selection process. The judges commented that Secret Sunshine is "a human story of one person's struggles with life which seemed most appropriate for the awards as it is built on Jeon's strong emotional performance (KBS Global)."

Submission deadline is on October 1st and announcements for nominated foreign language films will be out on January, 22nd 2008. Could this be Korea's first Oscar?

I don't know with Cannes... their movies belittle what I thought was my intelligence.
