So Orchid and I were not in the Arena of Stars where the 2008 MTV Asia Awards ceremony was held. We were at the Basement of Theme Park Hotel, which is next to the Arena of Stars.
I was in the Press Room, a rather small room where the stars would drop by after receiving their award. They would then give interviews to the press.

So I waited for Super Junior. I remembered counting the 10 chairs on stage and thinking to myself that if SuJu were to come, one of them would have to stand.
The award ceremony started at 7pm (ended at about 9.30pm) and I watched it through the LCD screens provided in the room.
There was an audio glitch at the start so I didn't get to hear the song dance crew Jabbawockeez was dancing to. Great choreography, by the way :-P.
Shiwon speaks English
And the winner is...: Super Junior steps up to accept the Favourite Artist Korea Award.They beat out Big Bang, Girls Generation and Wonder Girls.
Super Junior received the Favourite Korean Artist Award, which was the first one handed out that night. As you know by now, Shiwon gave a thank you speech in English. I was pleasantly surprised.
Here's what he said:
Eeteuk: 감사합니다. 우리 슈퍼주니 - 어! (Thank you. We are Super Junior!)

SuJu performs
I had to leave the Press Room to watch Super Junior perform since Favourite Artist Hong Kong winner Leo Ku was in the middle of an interview then.
I watched SuJu heat up the stage on one of the LCD TVs :-(.

Yesung, Kyuhyun, Eunhyuk, Ryeowook, Donghae and Sungmin kicked it off with the ballad Mirror, before all 11 boys (minus members Hankyung and Kibum) launched into their Don't Don and Thirst (Man in Love) medley - they so rock.
I wanna go for their Super Show concert now. Me want more!

Quick check: 'Darn, why are our shoelaces undone?'The boys lip-synced their fast tracks, and a local reporter said that it was a "top notch mimed performance" :-P.
Waiting...and waiting
Super Junior didn't turn up at the Press Room and I was a little bit disappointed. All that waiting for nothing...I guess they had to rush back to South Korea to promote their new track Pajama Party.
Nonetheless, here are some...err, interesting comments by the mainstream reporters I overheard in the Press Room:
Miss X: "You know the Korean boyband during the PC? The 2nd guy from the left (Ryeowook), he looks like a girl. I mean, you couldn't really tell, you know. Just put him in a dress-lah, and you have a girl right there."
Pretty boy: 'Do I look like a girl to you?'Mr. A: "Who cares about the Korean band-lar. There were so many of them. I was outside when the PC was going on. Who cares, man?"
Mr. B: "That one's so fat (Shindong), people say he ate the other members who aren't here."
Hee hee, I think the comments are rather funny. I bet they didn't know a K-pop fan was around to jot things down. Ha ha...I kinda love my anonymity.
Super Junior, keep your word and come back to Malaysia for the Super Show concert, you hear?!

About the comment on Shin Dong,i can understand why they said that.. I mean,he's the odd one and in people's mind,it's always the good looking one with great body,great hair which will make it big in the entertainment industry. Those are the stereotype in people's mind. Honestly,i think i would too if i didn't know super junior....what more,Shin Dong. Right now,i know he's like...one of the most talented guy i've ever seen ^^

LOL..hahaha..omg, thanks for posting and giving me a good laugh today..that was hilarious! i'm not a fan of their music nor am i a hater either. i don't listen to their music but i like their personalities since watching "full house". those comments from the reporters just crack me up!
Their dancing was superb but they need to improve on the art of lipsyncing if they're gonna "cheat" their way through a performance... it was so obvious! I mean come on, britney and ashlee simpson get flak for lipsyncing so how come everyone is fine with it when asian performers do it?
I wish there had been more asian performers though... would have been nice to see more korean groups!

those were the same thoughts I had when i had first met them.. although it was a little different because i thought there were more girly-looking than just ryeowook.. i had somehow a different view of shindong before. I said hmmm he's fat yet he's there so he must be really talented.

alchocoholic, I agree with you. They should improve in their lipsyncing because it was really bad. Their mouth were barely moving O_O. And yes again,agree with your second statement. I can't seem to get it why the asian singers always manage to escape and not get busted due to the lipsyncing. English singers would have already get the "Boos..." from audience
this is really minor but i just wanted to clear up that they don't say "우리 슈퍼주니어, huh!" but they say "우리 슈퍼주니 - 어!" it makes less sense when you put it in english because of the syllable difference of junior in korean and in english.. so it'd be kinda like "we are super juni - or!"

Actually what eeteuk was saying was: oori neun Super Juni-o(r)e(h)yo! (like a twist in the last syllable of junior and also a more polite way of introducing themselves with the -ehyo suffixed) It is their signature intro :)
Also suju sang 'mirror' LIVE (hence the mics they were holding while performing). They usually lipsync their powerful dance songs as it is really tiring to do power dances and sing at the same time. But check out some of their 'don't don' videos where they sang live damn well and danced their power dance too.
I was there at the MAA too and my friends who did not know shin dong (or only knows him as the fat guy in suju) were amazed at his dancing skills. I think he deserves more credits! shindong is amazing!
I thought the same thing about shindong when i first saw super junior, but then i saw his moves and was like "wow big boy can move!" he motivates me to want get up and move.
As far as who looks more feminine in Super Junior, they all have had their moments. I could see how Ryeowook would look like a girl.

I think its awesome that you guys were invited as press!! I am korean and can speak it, but reading is a different matter, so I come to your website for all the k-news! I love your website since you post news without the negative/judgemental opinions.
Thanks for your coverage of SuJu! So glad that they won. As for some of the comments...I think they were kinda nervous since it was such a big event and overall as a group, I think they were a little uncomfortable since they don't speak english well. Usually Kangin and Eeteuk who speak so eloquently in korean really couldn't contribute. I think Siwon did a great job; he seems to master the languages better than others.
As far as Shindong...he has more talent than any of those reporters have in their pinky finger!! SuJu is not SuJu without Shindong. He is awesome and cute, too! :)
As for the lip-syncing, like bubbles said, you can't dance like that and sing live, no matter who you are. But do check out their videos where they sing live or better yet, get their Super Show album of their concert. It's one HOT album.

well, i'm not really into the korean music scene compare to the film scene... but after i watched SuJu in MAA, i was impressed with their performance except, they should learn more how to lipsync...
their dance??? i loved it so much & shindong really can move lar! don't judge a book by its cover... by the way, MAA was my first time watching SuJu performance & of coz my first impression when i saw shindong, 'wow, they got a big guy in SuJu but he really can move!!
p/s: SuJu's fan, i'm keen to know more about SuJu!!! any good song to recommend and plus i do love the ballad that they sang in MAA!

I don't blame them actually. If we were in 2006 and you were to ask me about a 13-member Korean boyband, I'd probably have nasty comments as well :-).

Agreed with mainstream reporter. Who cares about Korean artist. But then looks when they perform. Mosh-pit people when silent. Mosh pit ppl were the one that have been picked to been there. Come on where are their fans that cheered before that. Does the boys in mosh-pit silenced them or what.
Their perf kinda draggy. they should sing Marry U and Don't Don full song. Since I'm not their fans and only knew few songs only.
No that I biased or anything. Not to forget the silent treatment for SNSD when annoucement for Korean nominees.

OMG. These reporters are so damn mean, yo. I hate it when people are commenting such negative things on SuJu. It just makes me wanna punch their faces. Sometimes, I just feel like yelling at those people who say such bad things about SuJu. If you people out there, those who are not a fan of SuJu, you can just keep quiet. And DON'T be so RUDE. Actually, ShinDong was the FIRST member of SuJu i know. Cause i watched a Korean drama, which ShinDong also acted in it. That's how i knew him. And i began to know more of SuJu. And now, I am a BIG FAN of theirs. Sorry if I'm being so sarcastic. ^^
Well, as in the Girly thing, I don't think that RyeoWook looks like a girl. I'm not sure about this, but in my opinion, I don't think that he looks like a girl.
All of the SuJu members are SOOOOO CUTEEEE ^^ They all have different great talents. And they're so friendly, they're also really good in fan service. That's why I LOVE THEM!

and i got to say that they were really nervous to perform that night and were very amazing too. i was there and i could saw their faces before they perform. the mirror performance was live and actually VERY GOOD as they're very nervous. and the thirst performance was lipsync. but their moves were VERY AMAZING despite their lipsync. they have no prob in lipsync if you watch their other videos of the same song but i thought they must be really nervous as it it an international event.
and what the heck with the screaming part? we, I were screaming really loud that my throat sore that night for screaming my heart out. but i think maybe you didn't heard because we were AMAZED by their performance and shouldn't we kept SILENT when they were singing? it is the basic for RESPECT, right?
