A Tale of Two Sisters gets Hollywood remake

The 2003 Korean horror movie A Tale of Two Sisters (장화, 홍련 Jang-hwa, Hong-ryeon) gets a Hollywood remake. Janghwa Hongryeon translates to "Rose and Lotus" but the film was known as A Tale of Two Sisters in its international release.

The American version is called The Uninvited and will be released in the United States on 30 January, 2009. DreamWorks paid US$1 million for the remake rights.

According to Korea.net, the original Korean version is the most successful Korean-made horror movie to date. The plot is an old one, stemming from a folktale of the Joseon Dynasty which was also named "Rose and Lotus", after the names of the two main characters. It had earlier been adapted into film in Korea in 1956, 1962 and 1972.

Kim Ji-woon wrote the screenplay and directed the original and Korean stars Mooen Geun-young and Im Soo-jung played the two sisters. A Tale of Two Sisters was nominated for several awards at various international film festivals. To top that, Im Soo-jung won the Best New Actress Award at the Pusan International Film Festival in 2003, and Kim Ji-woon received the festival trophy for best film at Screamfest, an annual horror film festival held in Los Angeles.

The US version stars Emily Browning, Arielle Kebbel, Elizabeth Banks and David Strathairn. The remake is directed by British brothers Charles and Thomas Guard and produced by the same people who made The Ring (Japanese horror classic) and Disturbia.

If you are a fan of horror movies, be sure to ear-mark this one!

Other Korean films that have been remade in the United States are: Il Mare, My Sassy Girl, My Wife is a Gangster, Oldboy and JSA.

Watch out for The Uninvited - from the
producers of 'The Ring' and 'Disturbia'.
Out 30 January 2009.

I heard about this a while ago, and I was curious about something: is anyone else confused by the title choice? There's already a Korean horror movie with the English title THE UNINVITED (and it was much better than TALE OF TWO SISTERS, in my opinion). Ah, foolish Hollywood producers. When will they learn??

Wikipedia says the OLDBOY remake is on hold, and does anyone know if pre-production has started yet for the JSA remake? (Now THERE's a movie I'm not excited to see.) Hmm.... Don't forget the 2008 American movie MIRRORS, which was a remake of 2003's INTO THE MIRROR (거울 속으로). (Oh, wait. Yeah, let's forget about it....ㅋㅋ)
