Gummy - 미안해요 (I'm Sorry)

K-poppin' with Fizzy

Gummy (pic below) has been receiving quite a lot of attention after the release of her 1st Mini Album, Loveless earlier this year.

However, she has always been one of my favorite female singers, especially after she unleashed Comfort back in 2008. Little did I know that it was actually her fourth album as she debuted way back in 2003!

Gummy is under YG Entertainment, the same talent agency as Big Bang, 2NE1 and Se7en. Before Comfort, the 29 year old had released 3 full-length albums and a special album, which contained a compilation of tracks she was featured in. It was aptly entitled Featuring.

A few years back, talents always released full-length albums but the norm these days is "mini albums." I guess for the recording companies, mini albums - which have a reduced number of songs, are more economical (but not for the fans!).

Anyway, here I am sharing with all of you the very song that made me fall in love with Kpop, Gummy's 미안해요 (I'm Sorry). The song featured T.O.P of Big Bang. He also starred in the official MV, along with another fellow YG artist, Sandara Park (of 2NE1). Enjoy!

Besides The Face Shop, Skin Food, Etude House, Missha and Laneige, i found another Korean beauty brand available here in Malaysia...

Korean brand Baviphat is available at Parkson Pavilion! At first all i wanted to buy was the "Kiss Scandal" - a dual tint and gloss stick which is a cheaper copycat version of Benefit's Benetint and gloss stick. However, i ended up buying more than that and even became a member! Check out the items i brought home with me...

Jung Ryeowon poses for InStyle magazine

Jung Ryeowon appears in a fashion spread for InStyle magazine's September 2010 issue.

LADY IN PINK: 'Do I look fat to you?'

Back in 2008, the My Name is Kim Sam-soon actress went on a diet for the movie Mellows. She drastically shrank and looked like she could fall over when the wind blew. Thank goodness, she is looking healthier these days.

Apparently, based on the high Korean standards, Ryeowon is currently "cute with chubby cheeks". Hmph, you call that chubby? You haven't seen real chubby.

SLIM: 'Yeah, I wear 'em skinny jeans good.'

MALFUNCTION: 'I can't stand up because I don't
have enough shirt.'

Nichkun takes another photo of sleeping manager

The mischievous Nichkun of 2PM is at it again, snapping another pic of his sleeping manager! On Aug 26, the 22 year old tweeted the below pic.

ZzzZzzz: (left to right) Wooyoung, Junho, Sleeping Manager, Junsu & Nichkun

Nichkun cheekily points to the sleeping manger while Wooyoung makes a funny face. Meanwhile, Junho “places” his hand on the sleeping man’s stomach and Junsu, happily poses for the camera :P. Oh, aren’t they imps, all of them!

This isn’t the first time Nichkun has taken and tweeted a pic of his exhausted manager. On Aug 11, he also shared the following picture.

What tickles the fancy of many is that in both pics, the manager is seen sleeping in the same position – hands together while clutching his mobile phone! It must be tough working for JYP Entertainment.

I wonder if the manager will lose his job since he’s been caught sleeping on the job twice?

Malaysian Kpop fans want 2PM

After a simple survey conducted at k-popped.com, 2PM emerged as the most-wanted group to perform live in Malaysia.

WANTED: 2PM (above) is the most-wanted act by Malaysian kpop fans

We conducted the survey for 15 days beginning Aug 7, and received 1,049 votes. Participants could vote for more than one act, which included popular bands such as Wonder Girls, Big Bang and Kara.

As things turned out, JYP Entertainment’s 2PM emerged tops by garnering a total of 361 votes (34%). The group’s Malaysian fans, who call themselves MYHottest, sure has a very tangible presence in cyberspace.

Coming in second with 297 votes (28%) is YG Entertainment’s Big Bang. It looks like there’s also a substantial number of VIPs (fans) in Malaysia.

The third most-wanted kpop act by Malaysian fans is SHINee with 287 votes (27%), thanks to Malaysian Shawols.

You'll notice that the top three most-wanted acts are male idol groups. What about the girl groups, you ask?

The two leading contenders are the Wonder Girls and Sonyeoshidae (SNSD a.k.a Girls’ Generation). SNSD bagged 248 votes (23%) while the Wonder Girls trail behind them with 221 votes (21%).

Thank you to all our readers who participated in the survey. Hopefully, it’ll be a good indicator for event organizers who are contemplating on which Kpop act to bring to Malaysia next :).

MYSJ raises RM1,300 for UNICEF

Words & vids by Sarah
Photos by Liz

Kpop fans in Malaysia got together for a good cause recently. Voices of Tomorrow (VoT), a charity event organized by MYSJ and Sapphire Pearls Malaysia, raised RM1,300 for UNICEF.

BY THE FANS, FOR THE FANS: Welcome
to Voices of Tomorrow

AT THE RECEPTION: Being greeted by the lovely ladies of MYSJ

The event was held at the Cosmos World Theme Park, Berjaya Times Square on Aug 14. Apart from raising funds for UNICEF, children from the Taman Megah Handicapped & Disabled Children’s Home were also invited for the two-hour event.

To entertain the crowd, there were performances by the 2010 Korean Wave Contest winners and participants, namely Progression, Ruffneckz, Cherry Boom and Dawn’s Arch.

DAWN'S ARCH: The all girl group strikes a pose before
their performance

CHERRY BOOM: 'See Ma, we can bend our legs like so.'

PROGRESSION: The Pahang boys hot things up

RUFFNECKZ: Dressed up like B2ST for a SHINee dance cover (Lucifer).
Oh, they are red devils indeed

The dance groups put on a good show as they got jiggy to the latest Kpop tunes such as Super Junior’s Bonamana, SHINee’s Lucifer and 4Minute’s HUH.

HUH HUH!: Cherry Boom wows us with their ability to dance in high heels.

The children from the home were treated to front-row seats. Later, they were all presented with goodie bags and took a group photo with Cosmo, the theme park’s mascot.

FOR A CAUSE: Putting a smile on the children's faces

On top of that, there were three separate lucky draw sessions in between performances. Goodies given away ranged from yummy Korean food hampers to the much-coveted Super Junior Boys In City 3 photobook. After the event wrapped up, everyone was free to go on unlimited rides at the theme park.

WINNERS ALL: Happy audience members receiving
their goodies

However, VoT closed on a rather somber note and some of the committee members were even crying. They were heartbroken because VoT was their final major event together as a team. The committee will dissolve after this due to personal commitments.

FAREWELL: The MYSJ committe members saying their goodbyes

VoT is actually MYSJ and Sapphire Pearls Malaysia’s fifth charity project. Their previous charity efforts included a blood donation drive and a world record attempt at conducting the largest dance class.

VoT is considered a success judging from the supportive crowd. It was inspiring to see Kpop fans doing their bit for charity in the name of their fave stars. Here’s hoping that other such events will take place in the future.

Good, Better, Beast!

Review by Liz K-popped
Originally published in Galaxie (August 1 - 16, 2010 issue)

Kpop fans were given a fantastic treat on 26 June when Beast rolled into town for an exclusive showcase. The six-member pop group was in Kuala Lumpur to promote the new Asian edition of their Shock of the New Era album.

Beast -- stylized as BEAST and B2ST -- put on a spectacular one-hour show at KL Live. However, while the group’s performance proved to be awesome, there were many disgruntled fans due to the showcase's messy organisation. For one, due to a series of miscommunications, quite a few fans -- some who were present at the venue as early as 6am -- had to be turned away.

On top of that, the crowd at KL Live were constantly reminded not to push during the showcase. Before the show kicked off, a special announcement was made on the matter as 35 fans had already fainted. Even BEAST themselves cautioned their excited fans of the situation during the show.

Those problems aside, Beast's showcase in Malaysia was superb! Prior to showtime, Beast music videos were shown on the big screens to warm the crowd up. Who needs an opening act when you have fans who can heartily sing along to your Korean tracks, right? Even music videos by 4Minute, a girl group under the same talent agency, Cube Entertainment, were enthusiastically received.

Then at 10 minutes to 9pm, Beast appeared onstage in smart, white suits. The boys kicked off the party with their debut hit, Bad Girl, before a quick interview session where they were asked what they thought of Malaysian fans. Needless to say, their response -- “So beautiful” -- caused the fans to roar in delight.

Beast then launched into Mystery. The maknae (youngest member) of the group Dong Woon, then introduced – in English – the group’s next song: the easy-listening ballad Easy. Then as the boys took a quick break to change costumes, three lucky fans were invited onstage to dance and sing to Beast’s smash hit, Shock. The audience was then asked to select the best impromptu performer. The lucky fan got to remain onstage for a photo session with the boys.

The boys soon returned to the stage clad in red suits and happily took pictures with the euphoric fan girl.

After performing Special, a lucky draw followed. The lucky audience member, Siti, was then invited onstage and serenaded by the boys with their ballad Oasis. Siti was sure the envy of many that night as the boys focused their attention on her throughout the song.

Dong Woon then asked the crowd, “Do you wanna take pictures with Beast?” The fans, of course, screamed that they did and the boys turned their backs to the audience and posed with the crowd in the background. Cameramen were seen scrambling onstage for the Kodak moment.

In the final mini interview with the boys, the members of Beast were asked what their plans were after Malaysia. Doo Joon, the leader, said: “We’ll return to Korea for a day, then fly off to Japan for promotions. After that, we will be preparing for our third album.”

The spectacular Beast showcase then came to a close with the boys performing a medley of Shock, Bad Girl and Mystery. Before departing the stage, Dong Woon shouted, “I love Malaysia!” The crowd screamed their gratitude only for Doo Joon to run back out and add: “Me too!”

It's fair to say that Beast definitely made a mark with their showcase. With such addictive tracks and great showmanship, their performance has definitely whetted the local K-pop appetite for more Beast-ly things. Let’s hope the boys return with a full blown concert in the future.

Review: SMTOWN LIVE '10 iPhone app

I chanced across the free SMTOWN LIVE '10 iPhone app in the iTunes store today, and it turned out to be quite interesting. Here's a quick review of it.

There are four main sections in the app: SM콘서트 소개 (SM Concert Intro), SM콘서트 응원하기 (Cheering For SM Concert), WITH SM, and 스타응원 게시판 (Star Support Board). Read on for a look at what each section represents.

SM콘서트 소개 (SM Concert Intro)

As the title suggests, this section provides information regarding the SMTOWN LIVE '10 concerts, which will take place in Seoul (August 21), Los Angeles (September 4), and Shanghai (September 11).

There is also a brief introduction of the SM artists who will be performing, namely Kangta, BoA, Yunho & Changmin, Girls' Generation, SHINee, TRAX, and f(x).

While everything is listed in Korean, you can still stare at the pretty pictures of your favourite stars as there is a gallery section for each artist. Apart from that, you can also listen to the short audio clips. :)

SM콘서트 응원하기 (Cheering For SM Concert)

This section fascinated me the most. If you're going for the SM concerts but don't want to spend money on lightsticks and banners, have no fear for the iPhone is here!

There are virtual lightsticks, colour cards, flashing lights, moving banners as well as balloons for you to flash on your iPhone screen during the concert. Also, you can record yourself cheering the artists on and play it back during the concert. Amazing, huh?!

DECISIONS, DECISIONS: Blue lightstick
for Super Junior...

... or pink balloon for Girls' Generation?

WITH SM

I don't really know what this is for. It seems to be discount coupons for Koreans or something.

스타응원 게시판 (Star Support Board)

If you have an account, you can post messages for your fave artists.

The app is basically a gimmick, but it's one that will put a smile on any fan. Want to download the app and try it out yourself? Get it HERE. :)

Malaysian Fan Gift Project for Lee Seung Gi

Malaysian Lee Seung Gi Fan Gift Project

It started off with two Malaysian Lee Seung Gi (LSG) fans who wanted to know if there are other fans out there who loved the 23-year-old 2 Days 1 Night star. And so Khoo Yoke Leng and her friend created a fan page on Facebook called ♥LEE SEUNG GI 이승기-MALAYSIA AIREN ♥.

After only four months, more than 300 fans joined the page. The move to create a page for the gathering of Malaysian Lee Seung Gi fans was an excellent idea as the fans enjoyed exchanging LSG updates and a great bond between them have been formed. The bond has been made stronger each day by their love for the Korean singer / actor. In no time, they had embarked on a Fan Gift Project for their beloved Seung Gi.

The main objective of the Fan Gift Project is to let Seung Gi know the existence of his Malaysian fans. YES LSG...THERE ARE FANS HERE IN MALAYSIA & WE LOVE YOU!
The project took four months to co-ordinate and it was headed by one of the creators of the FB group, Khoo Yoke Leng (@yokelengkhoo). Gifts that were collected for Seung Gi includes a pair of Selangor Pewter chopsticks and shot-glasses, "vitamin pills" filled with love messages, a fuzzy calendar showing Seung Gi's debut date, scrapbooks, letters, postcards, soft toys etc. The box which was to be flown to South Korea containing the gifts came up to 6kg in weight and cost nearly RM300 in postage fee!

Nadya (left) and Yoke Leng at the post office sending off the 6kg gift box

Collecting the gifts was only part of the project. In an e-mail interview, Yoke Leng told me, "The main problem we had was...how do we get the gifts to Seung Gi?" Although the girls had LSG's company address and the KBS address, they were not 100% sure if the gifts will arrive to Seung Gi, with no one on the other end to receive it. It was too risky to just send the 6kg box over to Seoul.

Luck has it, that one of the Malaysian AIREN's recommended Alex (@AA_CHAN), a blogger and English Instructor in Seoul. He would be the recipient of the precious box of gifts, ensuring that it would be given to the right people. At the same time, Yoke Leng got to know a Korean AIREN from Lee Seung Gi's official fan club in Korea. Yoke Leng arranged for Alex and the Korean AIREN to meet and the latter will then pass the gifts to Seung Gi! Whalla, project completed!

The box left Malaysia on 31 July and reached Seung Gi on 14 August 2010. :-)

Malaysian AIRENs are very happy indeed!

Seung Gi fans call themselves AIREN. "Airen" means "someone i love" or "a loved one" in Mandarin.

Letters & postcards were included in the gift box.
Each gift is meaningful and painstakingly prepared with love.

Nadya, Yoke Leng & Aziem: Fans share a common bond

Love pills....sure to cure any ailment

Shot glasses so LSG can enjoy his soju better. How thoughtful!

Andre Kim passes away at 75

South Korean fashion designer Andre Kim (real name Kim Bong-nam) passed away at 75. The unmarried fashion icon is survived by his son Kim Joong-do.

According to AFP, Kim passed away late Thursday (Aug 12) at the Seoul National University hospital where he was being treated for pneumonia. Kim was also being treated with anti-cancer chemicals after a surgery to remove colon cancer in 2005.

The eccentric Andre Kim was not only known for his evening and wedding gown collections, but also his quirky sense of style.

He always wore white “spacesuit-like” outfits, put on layers of thick makeup and had hair that looked like it came straight out of a spray can. Nonetheless, the septuagenarian was much-loved for his peculiarity as well as his designs.

President Lee Myung-bak sent condolences to Kim’s family. According to the president’s office, Kim will also be awarded the Medal of the Golden Crown, South Korea’s highest award for contributors to culture.

Rest in peace, sir. Thank you for the memories…your legacy will surely live on.

Miss Korea Kim Joori is in the running for Miss Universe 2010

In 2008, we had Sun Lee (Lee Ji-sun) while Sun Na-ri represented South Korea in 2009. What am I prattling about? Why the Miss Universe pageant, of course.

Hwanhee flexes biceps in While Doing MV

One-half of Fly to the Sky, Hwanhee unleashes the MV for While Doing, the title track from his second solo album H-Hour.

POPEYE: 'Say hello to my (not so) little friends.'

The song doesn’t quite do anything for me, but the MV sure did catch my attention. Hwanhee shows off his killer biceps…but whoa, the man’s gotta stop guzzling those protein shakes for a bit.

While we do appreciate toned and sculpted physiques, Hwanhee’s arm muscles seem a wee bit too huge for his (now tiny) frame. The 28-year-old singer looks like he’s about to topple over anytime with those bazookas on. See for yourself below.

I love you Hwanhee, but don’t you think you’re overdoing it a little on those hammer curls? :-P

2AM's Seulong is Bleeding in 2winS' new MV

Korean hip-hop duo 2winS have finally released their first ever official music video for their track 피가나 (Bleeding).

2winS debuted early July with their mini album 2wingS and started off by promoting their title track 별놈 (Star), a fun rap number which did not have an MV. Bleeding, on the other hand, is a mellow song with a slower pace and features Seulong of 2AM as the lead male in the MV.

2WinS: The duo gets Seulong of 2AM to
bleed for their MV

For those still new to 2winS, the name actually stands for "2 winners" and the duo is not an actual pair of twins. They are instead made up of rapper TopBob (32) and vocalist Bumkey (26).

If TopBob seems familiar, that's because he also makes up one half of another duo called TBNY. Bumkey is a singer who has been featured in many songs, most notably, Epik High's 바보(Fool).

Bumkey also spent some years in Los Angeles and speaks fluent English. It's interesting to note that the lad lost his beautiful voice for more than 2 years after undergoing vocal chord surgery, and had to work hard to gain it back. After having gone through many obstacles, let's hope that 2winS will eventually turn out as winners in the industry. :)

The Bleeding MV is actually rather creepy with its dark undertones. It even has a scene of Seulong cutting himself to give life to his lover (gasp!). Watch it after the jump and let us know what you think.

Losing blood and losing your girl. Could there be anything worse than that? ;|

As an extra, here is a video of our favourite superstar Rain with a short message about 2winS (in Korean) when they just debuted.

Lee Min-ho needs a tan, and he gets it in Maldives!

It's a matter of Personal Taste...do you like tofu?

Boys Over Flowers actor Lee Min Ho recently released photos via his Twitter account (@ActorLeeMinHo) of himself on a tropical island paradise. He uploaded the pics on Twitpic without an explanation to where he was. Even as i was composing and publishing this post, news is out that Lee Min-ho spent 6-days in Maldives! Don't ask me how his fans got the news! They are just such great detectives when it comes to their favourite stars.

A Korean news article stated that Lee was at the beautiful white-sand beach for six days, relaxing after completing his second drama - Personal Taste in which he stars opposite the lovely Sohn Ye-jin.

The drama is an adaptation of a Korean novel of the same name. Personal Taste (16 episodes) aired in South Korean from 31 March - 20 May 2010. If you've seen it, tell us what you think of the drama.
